Follow the adventures
of "Mac", an infantryman in Vietnam in a series of novels — rich
in the ways of the grunt, told with a style that relates deadly situations
yet with the author's keen sense of humor. There are heart-pounding life-and-death
situations, the tension relieved not simply by humor, but downright laugh-out-loud
scenes, as well as moments that bring a tear and a tightened throat to
any reader's emotions.
Sgt. Major Brand Books offers you the opportunity to enjoy this series of novels
based on fact-borrowed fiction. Written by John E. McDonald a Canadian who, having
served two years in the Canadian Army, volunteered in the US Army so he could
serve as a soldier in Vietnam in 1969-70.
Describing himself as a Huckleberry Finn who chose to go to Vietnam, the author
was not a rear echelon soldier, but a recipient of the Combat Infantryman's Badge
and the Purple Heart.

Here,
Piggy! first in the series and a limited edition. The
story of Mac, an ordinary US Army grunt during the height of the Vietnam
War — except he's mischievous, bright, inventive, an experienced
outdoorsman, and a Canadian.
He's kicked out of his platoon by an inept lieutenant for falling into a raging
river and losing his machine gun. Alone, he makes his way through terror-filled
jungle, eludes the enemy and staggers out of the boonies to a highway. A second-string
reporter finds Mac hitchhiking and stumbles onto the story that creates his reputation
as well as havoc and hilarity from the jungle to MAC-V headquarters.

A
Salt. (Book 2) We follow Mac, the Canadian
volunteer, again in A Salt. He's sent to Hawaii to
get his US citizenship after an erroneous story gets back to the States
that he was a mercenary grunt hired by the US Army to fight in Nam.
During his ten days there, Mac continues to get into humor-laced trouble, makes
new friends, scores with the ladies, shoots a troublemaker's surfboard, and refurbishes
WWII rifles to be returned to Nam for snipers.
With a 1903 model .30-.06 rifle (with its own fascinating history), Mac returns
to Nam and the Rangers he feels at home with. Mac and the Rangers spend their
days and nights trail watching, gathering information, snatching prisoners, saving
other grunts, killing an NVA general, and kidnapping a short-legged VC tracker
dog. Their hard work pays off and they are given in-country R&R where Mac's
humorous side blossoms as a champion liar.

Dinky
Dau. (Book 3). In Dinky Dau,
the third novel in this Vietnam trilogy, Mac's exploits continue to
trigger our tears and laughter. Sergeant Youngblood's rogue Ranger
team goes on a rampage. They ambush, rape, kill, steal, smuggle goods,
and hole up at an old Frenchman's villa near the Cambodian border.
On their way home from Reporter Tex Payne's party, nurses Susan and Dawn, Captain
Garibaldi, and CIA agent Hart are in a car crash with an Army truck stolen by
Blood's team. The mavericks kill the driver, kidnap the captain and nurses, then
take them back to their hideout where they brutalize and repeatedly rape the
nurses.
With their Ranger teams and tracker-dog Airborne, sustaining characters Mac and
Sergeant "Flash" Gordon are sent to the field to track Blood and his
men. Later, using his incredible abilities to improvise, economize the truth,
and manipulate, Mac arranges for former VC Billy and Airborne to take a most
unusual trip. McDonald once again takes us into the lives of the grunt in Nam,
giving us a grin one minute and a look at evil the next.
